Letter from the Editor: Why Our Mission Matters for the Success of Our Business

¡Hola! First off all, I want to say MIL GRACIAS for continuing to support Mexico In My Pocket. Lately, I’ve been doing a deep dive on our company’s communication style and how we present ourselves. While many of you might know us as a Mexican gift shop, our true mission has always been to counter negative stereotypes by spreading awareness on the beauty of Mexican culture.

What do we mean by that?

As a journalist, working in mainstream U.S. media, I noticed that Mexico’s stories are often tragic and/or negative in nature. As a storyteller, my mission is to show you the beautiful side of Mexico. The Mexico that I grew up experiencing. In order to continue promoting that mission, our newsletter will take on a new style that I hope you’ll enjoy!

Here’s what you can expect more of:

  1. Fun facts. Since our mission is to help people experience a more authentic version of Mexico, I will work on including a fun fact on Mexico for each newsletter.

  2. Travel tips. Promoting travel to Mexico is important to me. I want people to experience cities outside of Cancun and to get in touch with what truly makes Mexico magical. Each region is unique, diverse, and has its own traditions and culture.

  3. Food. Expect more topics around food. Whether it’s recipes, restaurants, or tips and tricks in the Mexican cocina, I want to discuss more food related topics.

  4. Shopping. Of course, we will continue to share exclusive discounts with you all. But our emails will be “less promotional.” When you support us, you support members of our community––including Mexican artisans, business owners, and employees. We are always so grateful when you shop with us and we always strive to empower Mexican businesses by promoting their products and sharing their unique stories!

  5. Artisan stories. As always, I am working hard to write and produce more interviews to tell you about the artisans who create the products we sell. Telling their stories is one of my favorite parts of the job and I look forward to continuing this.

  6. Letter from the Editor. Every once in a while, you’ll hear more directly from me. If there’s something that’s on my mind or something I want to share with you, I will be writing to you in this newsletter.

  7. Community. I’m most excited about this new section! Each week, we’ll be spotlighting individuals from our community who I think you would enjoy following and/or supporting. Community is a huge part of WHY I continue to do this. The people I have met through Mexico In My Pocket are truly what makes this brand so special and I want to introduce them to you.

Here’s when you can expect our newsletter:

Our email newsletter will now be sent to your inbox on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3p EST. And text messages will be sent Mondays & Wednesdays at 3p EST. Unless there are any special and/or major sales that we want to alert you on, we won’t be sending you a newsletter other than those dates.

That being said, I would like for this newsletter to be “less promotional” as that is something I always intended in the beginning, but struggled to execute due to the fact that I was working two jobs!

Do you have any questions or feedback for us? Feel free to reply to email me at luisa@mexicoinmypocket.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Con mucho amor,

Luisa
