'Alicia's Delicias' Oreja Cookies

'Alicia's Delicias' Oreja Cookies

Alicia Becerra uses her love for creativity and baking to create delicious cookies with Mexican themes. You can find pan dulces, aguas frescas, lotería cards, sugar skulls, and Frida Kahlo cookies on her Instagram account! Her love for pan dulce in general is what led her to "cookify" the Mexican sweet bread for her birthday.

Since then, Alicia says she's always thought about her favorite things to "cookify." Now, she's managed to bring classic Mexican traditions to life through these beautiful galletas. Her favorite set of cookies to make is pan dulce, which is typically eaten for breakfast. And lucky for us, she's shared how to create her orejas which is a type of this bread. Her cookies contain typical ingredients like flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. And though they don't taste like the typical food items she says it would be awesome to try and we look forward to seeing what she bakes in the future!

Step 1: I used a heart shaped cutter for the cookie and cut off the bottom. I then used that same cutter to cut the rolled out fondant and then adhere to the cookie with royal icing.

Step 2: With a ball sculpting tool, I engrave the swirls to mimic the oreja layers.

Step 3: Using edible brown paint (food color gel mixed with vodka) I paint in the swirl. Then with a lighter brown paint, I add color to the rest of the cookie.

Step 4: Now that the cookie is painted and still wet, immediately add a mix of sugar and cinnamon to the cookie. Spoon on heavy to make sure you cover the entire cookie. Then, knock off the loose sugar over a plate.

Step 5: Now, you have an oreja sugar cookie to enjoy!
